Five for Friday – Daylight Savings Hacks
November 12, 2021
Daylight savings can affect us all in lots of different ways. For my Aunt Kathy, she gets excited that it’s darker earlier and looks forward to snuggling up with a good movie. For me, I can start to feel down, especially with bad weather, as apparently I function better with lots of sunshine.
This Five for Friday, we’ve got some daylight savings hacks for you that might help you enjoy this time of season a little more, whether you enjoy the chilly darkness or miss the warm sunshine.
#1 Light Therapy Lamps
With winter upon us and COVID-19 keeping us indoors more, the lack of natural sunlight can cause some people to experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD). SAD is a type of depression that usually occurs during the fall and winter months and one great way to treat this is by using a light therapy lamp. The most affective light therapy use is between 2-30 minutes in the morning, with a light intensity of 10,000 lux.

#2 Gratefulness activities
I’m all kinds of thrown off this year with daylight savings time and it’s been an adjustment for my schedule with my son, Izaiah. Here are some gratefulness activities I’m going to be doing this next coming week with him as we prepare our hearts for Thanksgiving and have some fun things to do indoors, as he’s not playing outside as long anymore. What a fun way to teach your kids about gratefulness, get them ready for Thanksgiving, and entertain with more indoor time.
Fingerprint Tree – Add your loved one’s fingerprints to this printable tree, including those sweet family pets, and hang a reminder to be grateful each day.
Gratitude Leaf Garden – Fun for all ages!
Fall Twig Wreath – Izaiah is excited about this one, because he gets to collect all the twigs…a great one for little nature warriors. 🙂

#3 Beat the dark
Take back those hours you lost in the evenings with some fun glow-in-the-dark activities!
Put those pumpkins to good use with glow in the dark ring toss – make it as complicated or simple as it needs to be depending on the ages of your kiddos.
#4 Cosy up
Embrace those chilly evenings with some cosy fall films or autumn books! Here’s a list of some of the top suggested films to fill your evenings with! Ahhh…You’ve Got Mail!
