Five for Friday – February Fun!
As we dive into February, Cindy March, an incredible FMN Board member, has some fun forgotten February holidays for you to enjoy this month!

1st Saturday in February – International Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day!
Yes people, this is real! Originated in the 1960’s by a really cool mom in Rochester, NY, this day will definitely lift you out of the Winter blahs! There are said to be only two simple rules in celebrating:
1.) Spread the word about this holiday, &
2.) Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast!
Most of us are wallowing in slush, mud and grey skies of mid-Winter. We are seriously waiting to watch a ground hog “tell us” how many weeks are left until Spring….I for one, would be much more interested in waffles or pancakes al a mode as a slice of pure sunshine!
I Scream
You scream
We all scream
For ice cream!
I wake
You wake
Ice cream for breakfast
For goodness sake!
Grab a scoop
Make it two instead….
I’m going to enjoy
Breakfast in bed!!!!

February 10th – Umbrella Day
In honor of this amazingly important invention that not just protects us from rain and sleet, but also UV rays, it’s time to check your umbrella inventory! Check out the amazing designs available now…not just stylish but techy as well! Some can even be linked to your devices to remind you of upcoming downpours!
Umbrella from the word “umbra” means “shadow” and can be seen in artwork dating back to B.C. days. Many people have sought patents over the years to make advances to this once basic design.
So, take a moment today to dream about Summers days with large umbrellas on the beach and the coming “April Showers” that bring “May Flowers”!…..or take time to watch Mary Poppins float in with her magic umbrella – its sure to make you smile!
February 11th – Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day
I cannot seem to find the origin of this day, but I am pretty sure it was an optimistic person who saw their glass of milk as half full, rather than half empty!
So, if today does not go as smoothly as you’d like, just smile and think about the bright side! Make that low fat almond milk drink into a Super Shake!
Take some funny candid shots or selfies of your crew sporting milk mustaches and share this trivia to put others on the “half full” side of life!
You can even tell this “Dad Joke”…..
“If a cow doesn’t give milk, is it a milk dud or an udder failure?” !!!!!
February 12 – Lost Penny Day
Many of us have heard Ben Franklin’s famous quote “A penny saved is a penny earned” But did you know Ben Franklin also designed the first minted U.S. penny in 1787? It was later redesigned as the first coin to bear a president’s image. This was done in 1909 to honor the 100th birthday of Abraham Lincoln.
Here are a few fun family ideas to celebrate Lucky Lost Penny Day:
- Set a timer and see which family member can gather the most pennies from around the house or hide pennies for a scavenger hunt.
- Play a game where flipping a coin in “heads or tails” means a different action.
- Toss a Penny Game – where a timer is set and the winner is the player who tosses the most pennies into their bowl or jar.
- Begin a penny collection jar for a good cause or to begin saving for a special family outing.
February 26 – Tell a Fairytale Day
“Once upon a time” should start your day today.
Grab a special child or plan a video chat to curl up and read or tell a fairytale. You may be surprised at how different original fairy tales are from their Disney creations.
Classic fairy tales may not be familiar to wee ones in today’s world. This will be a good time to pass on a childhood favorite. Make it memorable and dress the part! Every prince and princess can quickly fashion a crown and don special fancy attire.
Consider pointing out the originating country’s location on a globe or map and draw a picture of the favorite parts.
Simply enjoy this special time as you take a moment today to “live happily ever after”!!!
